Nibong Tebal MP hauled up for rapping Guan Eng

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 7 — PKR has decided to haul up Nibong Tebal MP Tan Tee Beng for his strident criticism of Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng last week — making him the fourth party leader to face its disciplinary board for various offences.

The PKR political bureau made the decision at its meeting last Wednesday and will notify the ex-Gerakan man on Monday to meet the disciplinary board within 30 days, party secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail told The Malaysian Insider.
“After studying several statements issued by the Nibong Tebal MP, the political bureau has decided to refer him to the disciplinary board. The bureau is taking a serious view of Tan’s statements issued over the past few days,” Saifuddin said.

Saifuddin disclosed that the 10-man disciplinary board headed by Syed Kamaruzaman has met since Feb 1 to discuss the first three cases, adding it will also now handle Tan’s case within 30 days.

It is understood that the first-time MP is being investigated for not using internal channels to voice his dissatisfaction against the DAP secretary-general.

PKR, DAP and PAS form the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) which captured four more states —in addition to Kelantan which PAS controlled prior to the elections — and 82 parliamentary seats in Election 2008.

No PKR leader has ever been actually punished despite several disciplinary cases. Tan joins Kulim Bandar Baharu MP Zulkifli Noordin, Bayan Baru MP Datuk Zahrain Mohd Hashim and party supreme council member Datuk Zaid Ibrahim to be referred to the board in the past 10 days.

Zulkifli, who has been referred to the board previously, is being hauled up for lodging a police report against ally Khalid Samad from PAS for the Shah Alam MP’s support of non-Muslims using the term “Allah’.

Zahrain was put on the mat for criticising Lim as a “dictator, a chauvinist and communist-minded” and claiming PKR had compromised its interests in its dealings with DAP.

Zaid, who is in charge of the Common Policy Framework with the Pakatan Rakyat, is being disciplined for criticising the party for not suspending Zulkifli for his latest action.

The latest disciplinary case involved Tan when he openly supported Zahrain against Lim and complained of ill-treatment as he did not get allocations from the state government unlike DAP federal lawmakers.

“Many PKR lawmakers and PKR division leaders in Penang are disappointed with the Lim administration,” Tan was quoted as saying.

Tan upped the ante when he also questioned PKR deputy president Senator Dr Syed Husin Ali’s membership status in reaction to the political bureau’s decision to haul him up, saying Syed Husin’s former Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) was still in existence despite a merger with Parti Keadilan Nasional to form PKR.

He said the party’s continued existence meant that Syed Husin should be suspended as deputy president.

This is the first time a large number of party leaders are facing disciplinary action and comes at a time when PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim himself is on trial for a sodomy charge, his second in 12 years.

The former deputy prime minister was sacked from the Cabinet in September 1998 for alleged sodomy and corruption and was found guilty and jailed for both offences in 1999 before winning freedom in September 2004.

He returned to Parliament in August 2008 despite being accused of sodomising former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan on June 26, 2008. The trial started on Feb 2.
