Tehran, Feb 1 – Iran’s longest urban tunnel opened in Tehran Monday morning on the first day of the Ten-Day-Dawn ceremonies which mark the victory anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran. The 2,136-meter-long tunnel was constructed by Tehran's Municipality engineers and experts within 32 months.
The project was initially designed to be finished in a record period of just 29 months but it prolonged when the engineers faced two subway crossroads on their way to complete the project.
It is the first north-to-south urban tunnel which links two most traveled expressways of Tehran, the Chamran and Navab Safavi expressways.
One of the particular technical features of the tunnel is its quake-resistance structure as Tehran is prone to strong earthquakes.
February 11 is also the anniversary of the return home in 1979 of the Founder of the Islamic Republic, the Late Imam Khomeini, from his long exile.
