US Out To Strike A Deal With Russia Over Iran

Tehran, Feb 15 - While the US speaks of talks based on respect with Iran, it has launched extensive diplomatic efforts to involve Russia in the West's game against Iran, but it will surely fail due to conflicts of interests.

William Burns, among the senior-most State Department official in the Obama administration, said during a visit to Moscow that the US is ready to conclude a deal with Russia over Iran and moderate the missile shield, according to a report by IRNA.

Reuters quoted a senior US administration official as saying, "If we are able to work together to dissuade Iran from pursuing nuclear capability, we would be able to moderate the pace of missile defense development in Europe."

But 'moderation' as mentioned by Washington officials is ambiguous. They have not clarified what they mean by that. Does moderation mean giving up plans for missile shield?

Obama, who was against the plan two years ago on grounds that it can cause tension, maintained after his election as US president that he will agree with it, if it proves useful.

Robert Gilpin, a scholar of international relations, has maintained that the US intends to drag Russia and China into an arms race, thus creating conditions for wasting their economic resources.

Such measures will cause no concern for Iran because resolutions issued regularly by UNSC were all ineffective.

Such things are not new for Iran which has improved its regional status by pursuing its legitimate nuclear program and paid no attention to countless demands of the opposing side such as dialogue and confidence-building.

However, the US faces many challenges in the region and has resorted to the game of withdrawing from Iraq.

Economic sanctions will not work in all fields and the countries can get themselves accustomed to the most stringent conditions.

West's appeal to Russia to exercise pressure on Iran is natural. They have done all in their power and will also try to create capacities but there is nothing on the counter to deal over.

There is little doubt that Russia is opposed to US hegemony in the world and for the same reason it faced challenges created by the US such the Caucasus war and missile shield.

Burn's efforts to strike a deal with Russia over Iran will get nowhere and the country's popularity is gaining in the world.
