Zaid to set up new party in January

KUALA LUMPUR – Zaid Ibrahim has announced that he will be forming a new party in January next year. Speaking at press conference at his residence here on Friday, he said he would also be announcing the details on the party the same month.

However, in an apparent dig at this previous party, he said the new party would certainly not have "Keadilan" (Justice) in its name or was it Parti Angkatan Keadilan Islam Malaysia (Akim) as had been speculated in some blogs.

Asked how confident he was about the new party garnering support from the people, Zaid, the former Federal Territory Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) chief said: "I wish to assure our (proponents of the party's) friends that we will have a new party in the country...and I wish to give an assurance that it will not be a fledgling party, we will become big and strong."

On Nov 8, Zaid, who was contesting PKR's polls for the deputy president's post for the 2010-2012 term, quit the party citing the polls lacked transparency.

Prior to joining PKR, the former Umno member had been a Minister in the Prime Minister's Department when Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was prime minister.

Meanwhile, his former party has been told to get real and not to "dream of going to Putrajaya if the party has not made adequate preparations."

If the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) leadership continued to dream of capturing Putrajaya without making any effort, they might as well forget it, said Keadilan Youth delegate Syed Mikai Rizal Aidid.

"If we continue to dream of going to Putrajaya, we should actually look at the capability of our party first. If we don't make sufficient preparation, we may as well forget Putrajaya. It's better for us to buy a bus ticket back to the kampung," he told the conference of the Keadilan Youth Movement here Friday.

He said this when debating the policy speech by Keadilan Youth head Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin at the Keadilan Youth conference at the 7th PKR Annual National Congress, here Friday.

At the same time, he also criticised the logo used by the party for the PKR Annual National Congress which he described as a 'hospital logo'.

"As we can see in the logo of our congress today, it looks like there is a shape of a heart, like we are concerned about our safety. The logo for the congress looks to me like a hospital logo.

"I don't want to criticise, but it looks like we are incapable of maintaining the identity of our own party. Even in doing the logo, it looks like we are sick," he said.

Meanwhile, a Malacca delegate, Law Bing Haw reminded the Youth leadership not to be arrogant after winning a party position.

He said there were even leaders who were prepared to sacrifice noble values during the election campaign for the Central Leadership Council merely to secure a position.

"Remember that you are elected by the grassroots. The position is something that must be shouldered and not something to be proud of," he said, according to Bernama.

At the congress, incumbent Wanita chief Zuraida Kamaruddin and Youth head Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin retained their seats for the 2010-2013 term.

Their victory was widely expected. Zuraida defeated her challengers, Perlis PKR Wanita chief Dr Suraya Sudin and party Central Leadership Council (CLC) member Animah Ferrar, while Shamsul Iskandar edged Badrul Hisham Shaharin, better known as Chegubard, and also a CLC member.

However, the new Youth deputy chief is former vice-head Khairul Anuar Ahmad Zainuddin who beat Chang Lih Kang, the wing's former assistant secretary. The incumbent No. 2 Mohd Fariz Musa did not contest as he is now over 40.

Selangor state executive council member Rodziah Ismail retained her Wanita deputy chief post after defeating her challenger, Asmah Abd Kadir.
